Releases combining the talents and attitudes of producers from across the globe – and in particular involving the African content – are nothing new. The most successful is undoubtedly Africa Express, and it could be said bands such as Owiny Sigoma and projects such as DRC Music were spawned as a result of the ‘western’ artists travelling with the project.
Next month sees the release of Ten Cities – the combination of artists from 5 cities in each continent by Soundway Records with a focus on electronic music. With contributions from 50 producers, the project ”attempts to do something quite different: whilst searching for common ground it is also trying to highlight the differences. As a result hip-hop from the squats of Naples, bass music from Bristol, experimental techno from Berlin or jazz-tinged deep-house from Kiev are thrust upon the pumping kuduro of Luanda, the free-thinking crackled electronica of Cairo, afro-jazz from Lagos or the Sheng street-slang of Kenyan rap”.
The first track available as a teaser for the full release is the responsibility of Bristol’s very own Pinch. Check it out below, read more about the project here, and sit tight for November when you get to hear the whole thing.
