Turntable Lab (TTL) recently had Brian Shimkovitz – founder of Awesome Tapes From Africa – in on TTL Radio for a chat and the obligatory airing of his tape collection.
Coming in at around 45 minutes the selection is pretty varied. Things begin with a north African (and almost Tuareg-based) vibe, and after moving through a fair few genres finishes with the much more modern (and hip-hop based) sounds of Bill Diakhou.
My own personal highlights from the mix (other than the recent ATFA label releases) are either the second or fifth tunes. The laid back soul flavour of ‘Mona Come Back’ by Joe Nez is such a contrast to the opening track its impact is definitely accentuated, and the jumped up highlife of Eddie Donkors ‘Eye Banker’ is absolutely heavy, full stop. A special mention also goes out to ‘Super Jet’ by Wonder Dayo Kjore.
You can check out the mix and track list below, but don’t forget to read the interview over at the shops blog.
