William Onyeabor – ‘Who is William Onyeabor?’

News of a highly anticipated William Onyeabor compilation has been bubbling away in the background for a while now, and a slice of the full length release on Luaka Bop is with us available to check out. ‘Good Name’ is fairly typical of the meandering, digitized funk driven style that is associated with Onyeabor.

One element that resonates are the English vocals – a fairly rare feature in most current African re-issues. Being able to relate to the (suddenly slightly antiquated) lyrics is somewhat of a curveball, but these are ten heavy minutes that you will want to enjoy over and over again.

Most original presses of Onyeabor’s albums go for big bucks online, so the eventual release of the compilation is good news for the mere mortals among us. ‘Who is William Onyeabor’ is set for release on 15th October. You can also download the track via the labels site for nothing here.
