Tony Allen has been at it again. Even at over 70 years of age, it seems like there is no stopping the old boy. This time he is back, collaborating with the Abayomy Afrobeat Orquestra for a single due in February (and hopefully an album some time soon after).
What makes this collaboration all the more interesting is the Brazilian influences that the 13 strong crew hailing from Rio bring to the table (this is perhaps most noticable in the rough, rugged and emotive vocal brought by ‘Bnegao’). Recorded last may after Tony Allen had been touring South America, and after a stint in the studio a version of Jorge Ben’s ‘Meus Filhos‘ reared its head. Incidentally you can watch some footage from that very night below.
On the flip side of the release is a remix of the cover version (stay with me) by Robin Leduc, who does the whole affair some justice with a tasteful, dancefloor ready edit. Incidentally you will have to make do with said remix for the time being until the single is released in a couple of weeks.
