Sons Of Kemet – Burn

Much has been written about Sons of Kemet throughout the lengthy build up  to the release of their debut LP this week. Technically what you might call a ‘supergroup’, the band consists of 2 drummers, a Tuba player, and a front man who is master of all things reed-based. Each of the individual members is an extremely accomplished musician in their own right, however it might not be too presumptuous to state that none of them have ever been involved in anything quite like ‘Sons of Kemet’.

I could go into the intricacies of the percussion arrangements, the range of influences, or even the novelty of the brass bassline. However seeing as the album is now readily available, doing so would seem futile. If you haven’t heard it, lead single ‘Inner Babylon’ is probably as good a place to start as any. The video is below. There’s also a sample of the full LP in case you aren’t immediately convinced to part with your hard earned.

You can also watch their incredible gig from Dalston’s Vortex Jazz Bar in celebration of the album launch from last week over at the venue’s website. The footage is impeccable and the sound quality is spot on, but there is no mention of how long it will be up so don’t hang around.

If this is the first you have heard of Sons of Kemet, rest assured it probably won’t be the last.
