You know about Fela, and you know about Femi and Seun. What you might not yet know however is that the king of Afrobeat’s youngest son has enlisted Robert Glasper to produce his next album, ‘A Long Way to the Beginning’. Set for release in late February, Seun Kuti’s forthcoming studio LP is preceded by lead single and opening track ‘IMF’ (International Mother Fuckers).
The music made by any of the Kuti family is always going to be based around the Afrobeat sound originated by Fela himself, and it’s probably only right that this is the case. However there is an experimental feel to the initial offering from the album that suggests something more experimental may be in the pipeline. Whether it be a fresh impetus provided by the inclusion of Robert Glasper on production duties, or just a natural maturity in the career of Seun himself, ‘IMF’ is like very little else from the Kuti camp.
There is a deep rooted feeling of funk and a frantic tempo throughout the lead single that is particularly noticeable in the tracks early stages. This initial momentum, succeeded by a somewhat forceful approach combines to form an immediate blast of fresh air.
