Owiny Sigoma Band – Power Punch!!! (Preview)


The kind folk over at Brownswood have today released details of the ‘sophomore’ Owiny Sigoma Band album. Whilst there is only a short preview video available at the moment, it gives the initial impression that the band are sticking to the original base of nyatiti  (the traditional 8 stringed lyre-like instrument) and percussion. The only snippet of forthcoming material in the video goes on to showcase a small sample of a track where the bassline perfectly is imitating the nyatiti melody. Incidentally the video opens with the guys discussing the meaning of ‘Owiny Sigoma’ – going on to state that it translates to ‘he was a nyatiti player’.

In typical Gilles Peterson/Gilles Peterson fashion, the vinyl version of the LP is out a week in advance, which is nice. Check out said video below.
