Muyei Power – Sierra Leone in 1970’s USA

Muyei_Power_Wali_Bena_Soundway_Tumble_Weave_Tumbleweave_BlogSoundway records have announced details of their next release, and it marks their first foray into the music of Sierra Leone. You can hear the initial offering from the 5 track re-issue below, but you will have to wait for a while for the rest of the EP.

‘Muyei Power’ (or Orchestre Muyei) never managed to record a full album, however this EP is said to be a particularly important release of theirs due to its timing, context and quality. Recorded during the time the band spend touring the Californian college circuit in ’75-76, there is a frantic energy and sense of positivity on ‘Wali Bena’ that is completely infectious.

As always there a wealth of detail within the press release, but it is worth mentioning that the notes go into some detail about the bands incessant schedule and resulting eclectic direction. The idea that many of the tracks recorded by ‘Muyei Power’ were adaptations of traditional songs will obviously be lost on the modern listener, but it’s just one more welcome slice of history behind yet another highly anticipated window into the world of 1970’s African culture.

Scheduled for release on 28th April, hopes are high for this particular offering from one of the scene’s most revered and accomplished labels.
