Afrobeat Airways 2 – Return Flight to Ghana 1974-1983

The first Afrobeat Airways compilation was a big moment for this site. Not only did it contain (the subseqently Daphni-edited) ‘Cos-Ber-Zam’, but ‘Afe Ato Yen Bio’ is still a personal favourite around these parts even after this long.

4 years down the line, Analog Africa are readying the follow-up for a September release, and as of yesterday you can check out three tracks on their Soundcloud page.
The first is a guitar led funk excursion by what can only be the very same ‘De Frank’ (of ‘Professionals’ fame) mentioned in the opening paragraph. ‘Say Min Sy Soh’ is a much more eclectic arrangement, with the horns, keys and highlife guitar lines playing off against each other with regular exchanges. It is the Uppers International track, however, that brings the biggest smiles. From the same guys that were responsible for ‘Dankasa’ on the first compilation, ‘Aja Wondo’ is a much more vocal inspired journey, led by a deep meandering bassline fit to burst.
The list of artists included in the compilation is beyond belief, and the physical release is set to include a fair few treats. Keep your ears peeled for more snippets and the eventual full release. Big things go on.
