The omnipresent globe-trotting founder of everybody’s favourite African music blog is back with a new release on his label of the same name. Brian Shimkowitz of newly re-designed Awesome Tapes fame is plotting a 9th (yes 9th) release, this time transporting us to 1980’s Senegal.
Drawing from an almost intimidatingly vast array of influences, elements of traditional mbalax and most surprisingly NWA style NY rap are most conspicuous in Aby Ngana Diop’s single. Taken from the forthcoming reissue of her ‘Liital’, ‘Dieuleul-Dieuleul’ is (without hyperbole) one of the most astonishing arrangement’s i’ve heard come out of west Africa in quite some time.
Due out in early September, you can check out much more information on the release details, artist, and background here on the ATFA site. Until then the aforementioned album opener is below for you to get your ears around. I defy you not to rinse this on loop, just like I have been all week.
