There were understandably an abundance of tributes to the late Nelson Mandela following on from his passing, each one attempting to pay tribute to the man an his achievements. Many of these were understandably related to South African music, and in particular focusing on the Soweto region and the abundance of material hailing from it. Whilst it would be impossible to cover each musical tribute to ‘Madiba’ or rank any of them in terms of merit or authenticity, one selection well worth checking out was the one put together by Thristian BPM for his ‘Dark and Lovely Global Roots‘ show on NTS.
The track list is available in full below, and a quick glance will fill those with any previous experience of the area and its music full of nostalgia and positivity. With the help of Auntie Flo’s Esa, Thristian covered the likes of Hugh Masekela, Mahotella Queens, Brenda Fassie, The National Youth Choir Of Namibia and included some personal favourites of my own by Miriam Makeba an Teaspoon and the Waves.
You can check out the show on the NTS Mixcloud page here, but be quick because it won’t be up forever.
