The RBMA (Red Bull Music Academy) was in Madrid last year, and amongst the vast amount of dance and hip hop artists, there was a lecture by one of the fathers of Ghanaian highlife, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley.
I have only just got round to watching this lecture myself, partly because there are so many others to choose from, and partly because it, is over 2 hours long.
There are many topics covered in that time, including his fellow pioneers (E.T Mensah and Ebo Taylor to name just a few), the origins of highlife music, the reason it is called highlife music, and the acquisition of Ghanaian independence under president Kwame Nkrumah in 1957.
Perhaps the most amazing thing behind the video however, is becoming acquainted with the voice behind (what the man himself claims to be the birth of modern rap) the infamous vocals on ‘Simigwado’ by ‘Gyedu Blay Ambolley and the Stoneboofs’.
